C-16 was designed by Igor Ivanovich Sikorsky in October 1914.
Construction of three prototypes began in the workshops of the Aeronautical branch of JSC RBWS in Petrograd in November 1914 the
First of them had the factory number 154, was ready in January 1915
The plane was originally intended to accompany the air ships "Ilya Muromets" and the protection of their airfields from enemy aircraft.
The first three cars were successfully tested in the squadron aircraft, and the Russian-Baltic car plant received 24 September 1915 an order
for the production of devices With 18-16.
The C-16 was a small single-column single-engined biplane of the classical scheme is located ahead of the engine, truss-braced fuselage
with an open one double cabin, tricycle landing gear with a rear spike and tail surfaces of conventional type. The wings had a relatively large area.
The top wing with a transverse V had take-out, its scale was bigger than the bottom.
So, appearing first as a training and light reconnaissance aircraft C-16 turned into an armed fighter - becoming the first aircraft of such
class domestic design. Although S-16, like many other types of initially unarmed vehicles, multi-purpose, could not be a "classic" fighter, he played
a prominent role in the formation of Russian fighter aircraft. They were equipped with the first operational fighter units. On the future Russian
aces achieved their first air victories.
